The following events took place on September 17 in the years identified:

1966: The Father Roper Memorial Football Cup finds a resting place in the Trophy Room at Kingston College, as the college’s 4-1 aggregate at the National Stadium, all scored in the Old Boys match, gave them the cup.

1970: President of the State of Florida John Matthews Jr arrives in Jamaica by PAA flight at the start of his 10-day vacation as guests of Mr and Mrs George Barbar.

1972: Senator Hopeton Caven is re-elected general secretary of the Trade Union Congress at their annual conference held at the Ward Theatre. Edward Smith is elected president, whilst Oswald Coombs is elected vice president.

1974: Official gifts are exchanged between Prime Minister of Jamaica Michael Manley and Mrs Manley and President Julius K. Nyerere of the United Republic of Tanzania, and Madame Nyerere, in a short ceremony at Jamaica House. On behalf of the Government and the people of Jamaica, Mr Manley presented a mahogany carving done by Jamaican sculptor Lloyd Collins of Craighead in Manchester. A box of Jamaican cigars was also presented to the president.

1974: Some 900 books for children are presented to the Jamaica Library Service as a gift from the Jamaica Associates Incorporated of Boston, Massachusetts. The donation is made possible mainly through the efforts of Mr and Mrs. Maston Nelson, of said organisation, and Cecil Riley.

1985 : The stock market moves dramatically to record a 4.7 per cent increase, one of the largest daily increases in the history of the exchange. The equity moves from 26.26 points to 587.67, a new high.
